Just on the other side of the river, she stood, waiting for him to arrive. The woods were dark and creepy, even in the middle of the day. The dense trees let in little light. She stood, shivering. She had always hated the forest, with all of its creepy crawly critters. Reaching down, she scratched her bare leg, brushing off something tiny crawling up it.

“Come on. Hurry up. I hate it out here.” She knew no one was around to hear her.

The snap of the twig caused her to jump and spin around. Even though she was shaking, she smiled, knowing that he had finally showed up.

Her smiled faded to a frown.

“What are you doing here?” she asked the person standing in front of her.

She glanced down to see that the person was leaning on a baseball bat that was planted firmly on the ground.

“I came to see you.”

The girl glanced over the shoulder of the one standing in front of her. “Where’s…”

Her words were interrupted. “Don’t worry about him. He’s not coming.”

“What? Why not?”

“Because he doesn’t know that you are here.”

“But the phone call.”

“He didn’t call you.”

“I know he didn’t call. It wasn’t his voice. But I thought…”

“You thought wrong.”

“Oh. So why are you here?”

“To kill you.”

The girl’s eyes widened, as she glanced down at the baseball bat. “Is this a joke?”

“I don’t joke about killing.”

“This is stupid. I’m leaving.”

The girl started to walked past the person standing in front of her. But the killer stepped in front of her, blocking her way out of the forest. She glanced around, looking for an escape route.

“Get out of my way!” she yelled, shoving the intruder and continuing on.

Turning to glance back, the girl’s eyes widened at the bat high in the air above her head.

Just as Erica opened her mouth to counter Jake’s argument, a scream pierced the silence.
